Journey of a startup: Day 64

Rollin down the street in my six-four. That’s how long I’ve been going at this and today I came to a realization that there is just too much nonsense happening in the workplace. Whether its finger pointing, or simply not responding to messages, the reason behind it is always the same. Some random thing that doesn’t matter in the big scope of things. I’m not talking about times when people need to hop offline when life calls. I’m talking about the people who either complain all the time or feel like they are above everyone else and don’t have to do their job. The company pays you to do this work. Ghosting won’t make it go away. This ain’t Tinder.

At our company, if you have excuses and no solutions about how it will be better next time, you’re probably going to be out. A disruption in flow is more expensive than you may realize. People have to spend energy responding to unnecessary emails and attend more meetings while repeating themselves over and over, sometimes even going as far as defending themselves, and for what? NOTHING. This is demoralizing and a huge waste of time.

Yes, this is somewhat of a rant but also a lesson. Instead of brewing negativity and making noise, ascend. That’s right. Think about the big goal. Anything unrelated to that goal is nonsense. That doesn’t mean you should ghost others like mentioned above, but giving someone a head’s up about your situation is not only courtesy and respectful but allows the person asking to seek other ways of getting something done. That happens in what, a few minutes of interaction (minus the async time)? No problem created, problem averted, and the problem will get solved another way.

Let’s forget about EQ, I’m talking about work. EQ is for situations where you need to say or handle situations with sensitivity. If you focus on the work, there isn’t room for anything else because things become binary. Is it done, yes or no? Do you ever see the busiest people discuss the most minor of issues? Think about that.

At a higher level, there are no blockers.

This is the mantra I’m setting this week, and probably from here on out. What do you think about this?
